Week 10 - Casper

This week, I decided to do a little research on Steelcase’s Casper product since the use of glass wall systems is evident in all of our clinic designs. In their article “Casper Cloaking Technology: Privacy + Transparency”, Steelcase describes the pros and cons of glass walls, as well as discusses how you can use Casper to your advantage.


In the corporate world, there are many times where employees want to be completely visible and open to others while the information they are working with has to stay private. This sort of situation leads to a lot of workplace tension, which inspired Steelcase to develop a new technology that gives people transparency and confidentiality simultaneously. The thoughtful design and development of Casper has left customers thrilled about new design opportunities in the workplace.


I have seen this product work its magic a couple times, but when we saw it again at Interiors for Business this past Tuesday, I was reminded why it is such a fantastic product. Looking through Casper everything is crystal clear, but all screens appear black due to how Casper cloaks the light transmitted by LED displays. Casper is the perfect marriage between transparency and confidentiality, successfully providing privacy in plain sight.

    Catie,
    I find this technology very relevant in relation to the NEXT project as well. It is so crucial to provide both privacy, but also transparency in a healthcare setting. You want transparency to support the relatable atmosphere that patients desire, but you also want to incorporate privacy to support the need for confidentiality that is desired by both the patients and clinicians. I believe the Casper cloaking technology provided by Steelcase does just that.
    I am excited to see where and how you incorporate this technology into your NEXT Healthcare project!

    Catie, I think this is one of my all-time favorite Steelcase products because it really represents the research and technology that goes into their products to solve real-world problems in the workplace. This is the perfect solution for work areas that want to encourage collaboration but also have employees that prefer privacy. I have a hard time working when I know people are looking over my shoulder but it's so helpful to be able to find a balance between privacy and collaboration. Casper cloaking technology is a huge step in the right direction and I'm super excited to see what Steelcase does next in this area of design.

    I think I felt the same way as you- seeing this product again at Interiors for Business really made an impression on me. What fantastic technology! Our NEXT healthcare project in particular requires that extra level of confidentiality. I am so glad we had a chance to see it again in a different setting. Great Blog focus for this week!

Week 2 - Focus on Innovation

When Steelcase was founded in 1912, it was known as the Metal Office Furniture Company. The company has since developed into a wonderful, innovative place where designers can shop with the knowledge that they will provide their client with worthwhile furniture pieces. Week 13 - Passion-fueled Design

This week, I chose to research why exactly heathcare design is so important. Steelcase’s article “ Problem Solving + Passion Fuel Healthcare Design ” gives some insight as to why good healthcare design is so necessary. Each one of us has some sort of experience involving healthcare, whether it be a hospital or a clinic, and those experiences shape our opinions of healthcare. While experiences involving healthcare can be extremely positive, such as welcoming a new baby into the world, they can also strongly impact us in a negative way, such as a learning that a family member has cancer or another degenerative disease. Some of Steelcase’s furniture designers have encountered situations such as these, and the experiences fueled their empathy for those who rely on healthcare design and encouraged them to create spaces and furniture that can support those who spend a lot of time in hospitals and clinics.
